I was invited to speak to the Pratt graduate student design systems course. I spoke about how design systems have evolved at frog since the early Apple Snow White design language system for Steve Jobs to modern digital design systems for major brands across industries.

It covered aspects of brand and design systems, including:

  • frog’s long-standing history and notable early collaborations, particularly with Apple.
  • frog’s significant influence on the evolution and definition of design systems over the past 50 years.
  • Design System as a Strategic Asset & Brand Experience as Part of the Design System: its critical role in maintaining brand consistency across various platforms and products. Encompassing not just visual elements but the entire user experience of a brand indicates a holistic approach—the idea that every aspect of user interaction, down to the tactile feel and functionality, is part of the design narrative and a central tool in achieving business goals.

When the article was published, I was honored to find out that I was quoted alongside the renown Tony Fadell, inventor of the iPod, contributor to the iPhone and founder of Nest.

For the past 15 years, Yust has worked on AR and VR technologies, including Ikea’s AR Place app in 2017, which used a phone’s camera to superimpose representations of furniture on an image of your room, giving you a sense of whether that couch or table would fit and look good.

He’s also realistic. Though Frog has worked with some of the most recognizable companies in the world, including Apple, Yust said he hasn’t had a chance yet to work on something as tectonic as the iPhone.

He thinks of his time working on Ikea’s app, as well as projects that include using VR to help medical patients manage pain, as a waypoint on the path from the iPhone’s launch to whatever supplants it. “Humanity in general needs so much innovation right now,” he said.

When the COVID pandemic started and everyone was forced to shelter in place, especially in San Francisco, I started working on a project that would still allow for access to artwork at home. I wrote an application for the TV screen that would access some of the collection APIs that museums have been making available to the public. I used AirTable to store the APIs and some preferred tags related to certain genres (Japanese art at the Met for example), and curated a list of museums we would be interested in viewing at home – Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, The Met in NYC, the NASA image collection, etc…

The app is written in React and needed to resolve differences in the API data calls between the different museums, display larger versions of the images on the screen, allow a local user to pause, fast forward, or “save” an image they liked using a mobile web interface. I added some other features like coloring the matte according to a complimentary color in the artwork, and in the future I will programmatically control my receiver to launch and play the artwork at specified times.

For SF Design Week 2021, I helped support the presentation of the frog ventures collaboration with Campfire 3D run out of the SF studio. Our team discussed the ways product design collaboration has existed in the past and will change in the future with systems like Campfire 3D that are collaborative, leverage mixed reality and are connected to the cloud.

I investigated the features of the Snap Lens studio to benchmark against some of the custom computer vision algorithms we wrote at frog for the SFMOMA project. It is impressive how performant and feature rich their computer vision systems have progressed using only RGB webcams for both facial tracking and full body tracking supported by ML. I created some custom frog snap lens filters for frog design.
